It sticks to the mechanics of writing a basic introduction> literature review> methods> results> conclusion style thesis. but I used it to write a project based creative research thesis when I did my masters and found the advice was still valid. Oh — and the price point is not bad either. If you can only afford one book on the list I would get this one.

Synopsis “Authoring a PhD Thesis” involves the development of creative ideas. working out how to organize them. writing up from your plans. upgrading your text. and finishing it speedily and to a good standard. It also includes being examined and getting your work published.

This element of the PhD — the critical commentary — will constitute around 30% of the final work; the major part — 70% — will be a creative work of publishable standard: a novel. memoir. book of poems or collection of stories. for example. Assessment is by thesis and viva voce.

It is expected that most Creative Writing PhDs at Durham will have a 50:50 weighting between a creative portfolio and a literary-critical dissertation; however. this ratio is negotiable as particular projects may require a different weighting. or the emphasis may change after the completion of initial research.

The creative dissertation allows PhD students in Creative Writing to present a book-length original work in poetry. fiction. literary nonfiction. drama. or some combination of these. in addition to a scholarly research component.

The PhD focused on Creative Writing includes several kinds of research: Functions of writing. in their stages of spontaneous drafting. considered revision and redrafting. are recognised within the PhD as a kind of exploratory research that emerges from and means creative process. PhD researchers keep notebooks and tabs on source materials.
